Announcement from our CEO and Co-Founder

October 2024
By: Alexa Cortés Culwell, CEO and Co-Founder of Open Impact

A few months ago, I shared news with our clients that I now want to share with my larger network: I will be sunsetting Open Impact at the end of 2024 to accept an exciting new role with The Sobrato Organization (TSO). I will serve as both its first Chief Impact Officer and the President of Sobrato Philanthropies, which has granted $1.3B to date, largely focused on strengthening local communities. You can read the announcement here.

When I first began providing philanthropic advising services over a decade ago, the Sobrato family, which includes two signatories of the Giving Pledge, was my first client. In the role of Chief Impact Officer, I will serve on the company’s executive leadership team focused on both its business growth and integrated impact model across its three enterprises of Real Estate, Capital, and Philanthropy. My portfolio will be focused on leveraging TSO’s real estate expertise to address the affordable housing gap in the region and building out the company’s first sustainability plan.

As President of Sobrato Philanthropies (SP), I will be leading a talented team focused on growing thriving communities. This includes a regional and state policy agenda, and developing partnerships with government, corporations, and other donors/philanthropies who have aligned interests. SP’s team also supports a dynamic portfolio of family-initiated grants and impact investments focused on a diverse range of issues and organizations.

Before year-end, our team will be publishing a final reflection on the firm’s work, including some of the key ingredients as we sought to accelerate the scale and impact of our client’s philanthropy. We are also preparing an updated website that will serve as an archive for our key reports and provide updated information for our team as they take on new roles.

Thank you for your partnership on this journey with us. Please stay in touch and let our team know if you have any questions.

With gratitude,

Alexa Cortés Culwell
